cartoon workshops 2010
No update in recent weeks, I’ve been slaving away in the background on an all new expanded version of this site. It’s about 90% done, loads of new content.
In the meantime though I’ve been getting involved in a few comics workshops, next week I’m volunteering at the Fighting Words Graphic Novel Summer Camp. The following week I’m doing several comics workshops in 4 different Fingal County Council Libraries spread across North Co.Dublin. See the poster for details.

The last week has been somewhat good for ‘media’ ‘appearances’ of your truly. Last Saturday there was an article in the Irish Times on the homegrown Irish comics scene. I got a couple of choice quotes, and they even called Last bus “a small press gem”. Awesome. I’m going to use that in all my self promotional garbage from now on. Seriously though, it’s a very well researched and written story, check it out here.
I was also interviewed by the ever delightful Liam Geraghty for the Comic Cast. If you can get past the first ten minutes of faltering answers, half finished sentences, ums, ahs, yeah and … um yyeeaahh all set to a backdrop of nail hammering and Jeff Buckley ambience I think I may have made some sense. Never knew I could think aloud so incoherently when I try to describe my work.
Anyway, Last Bus issue two is now available in my online shop. If you live in Dublin, pick it up in Story on Crow Corner, Sub City, The Winding Stair or Forbidden Planet.
Off to Bristol on Saturday morning, volcano permitting. Will have a new mini comic version of an old story , an illustrated postcard set (which is related to the image above), alongside brand new editions of In The Aquarium, Stop Gap, and both issues of Last Bus.

I’ve a couple of pieces (including the one above) in this exhibition happening tomorrow night in South Studios, Dublin. Free cocktails and loads and loads of art stuff in a big warehousey type space. I’m sure it’ll be hipster-tastic.

So, like I posted on Sunday the launch party for Last Bus, issue two
is on in the Bernard Shaw tonight.
To whet your appetite I’m posting the first few pages of the lead story,
“Before the Thaw”, below. Enjoy!

It’s on here on Thursday evening. Do come along, more details on the way.

I don’t how I missed this back in February, but Sammy Harkham has announced that there will be a “Crickets” number 3. A self published 48 page monster of a comic. If you don’t know Sammy’s work, check out a load if his archived stuff that’s up on What Things Do. His work is amazing, one of my favourites.

Here’s an illustration I did last week for the “Free Irish Comics Day” 2010 poster. A nice collaboration with Robert Curley of Atomic Diner. He told me a story about trying to nick comics from one of those newstands on O’Connell street back in the early 80’s after seeing Superman II in the Savoy and we figured it would make a great image for the event. Free comics, geddit?
It was originally meant to be the cover for the Atomic Diner Anthology, but the book got canned due to lack of funds. Anyways I think there’s going to be a load of comics given away for free on the 15th May. As far as I know the likes of Easons are on board for distribution as well as the usual gang of comic shops around the country, so it should be interesting to see what, if any effect it has on the buying habits of your general comic punter in Ireland. The full poster, with text and details is below the cut.

Gone to print! Spent February and March working on issue two of “Last Bus”. I’m really happy with it. Here’s a sneak peek of the cover.
Yo UK and Northern Ireland folks! You can get hold of all your Cardboard Press goodies from us IN PERSON when we appear at the following conventions/shows in 2010. I’m sure there’ll be a few more added later on in the year.
Glasgow International Artists Bookfair. Glasgow 16/17th April 2010
Bristol International Comic and Small Press Expo 2010. Bristol, 21st-23rd May 2010.
2D Northern Ireland Comics Festival. Derry, 3rd -5th June 2010.

Here’s a submission I put together for Threadless. It was another assignment for Chris Judge’s illustration course. I wasn’t expecting to post about it until next week, but it went up live last night. Voting and scoring goes on over here.
G’wan, give me 5 out of 5, I dare ya.
